Tammy Reyes

On Tuesday, June 22, Tammy Reyes was recognized at the State Teacher of the Year banquet in Austin, Texas, as Region 3 Teacher of the Year. Mike Morath, Commissioner of Education, presented Reyes with an award.

"It is a distinct honor representing Victoria ISD as region 3 teacher of the year," said Tammy Reyes. "I am a second-generation teacher, proud mother of two VISD children, and the wife of a west high school coach, along with being a fourth-grade teacher at Vickers Elementary. Our personal and professional lives revolve heavily around education. Teaching the youth of our community is one of the most important jobs in our nation. When we teach with responsibility and urgency for student success, we plant a seed of growth that transcends the classroom. Often teachers do not see the direct results of their effort, but we hold close to our hearts that we have made a positive direct impact on our students' students' lives. We know this by the hugs, tears, laughter, and smiles that are shared with the students and families that we serve."

Reyes continues, "Being recognized as one of the top 20 teachers in the state of Texas was a very humbling experience with the memorable pleasure of convening with other teachers across the state who share the same passion for teaching. Hearing commissioner Morath and Dr. Brown speak of the importance of teachers and the gratitude that poured over us was something I wish every teacher in our district could experience.  It was motivating, inspiring, and I can't wait to get back in the classroom!"

Reyes, a fourth-grade teacher at Vickers Elementary, was named Campus Teacher of the Year and selected as the District Elementary Teacher of the Year for the 2019-2020 school year. She was honored at the VISD Teacher of the Year banquet in February 2020, held at the Victoria Community Center. District teachers of the year move to the Region 3 Teacher of the Year in their respective grade levels, where Reyes was also named Region 3 Teacher of the Year.
