Western Piece for Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Advances to Auction

Victoria East High School Senior Melissa Sanchez’s artwork for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo School Art Competition, which won Best of Show in the district, has been selected for the Houston Rodeo School Art Auction.

“As a senior, getting an award for my art is so meaningful to me,” said Sanchez. “It is especially exciting to have my art go to auction and be displayed in Houston.”

This year, a total of about 200,000 students participated in the Houston Rodeo School Art Competition. After over 800 works of art advanced to the next round from preliminary judging, 72 were chosen to advance to the Houston Rodeo School Art Auction on March 12.

This is Sanchez’s second year in a row to have her art take Best of Show.

“Art has always been an important and constant part of my life,” said Sanchez. “I’m glad to have the opportunity to do it at school too.”

“Melissa is an amazing artist and student,” said Victoria East Art Teacher Candace Coyle. “She has taken art with me for 4 years and I’ve been honored to be her teacher. I’ll miss her terribly when she graduates this year.”

Congratulations, Melissa! We are #VISDProud of your hard work and talent.
